Weekly summary of agriculture news from Vietnam (January 17, 2022 – January 23, 2022)

Livestock:

Nguyen Quang Dat in Dao Tu Commune, Tam Duong District, Vinh Phuc Province invested billions of Vietnamese dong in farming laying hens. His farm focuses on raising in cold coops with advanced science and technology.

With an investment cost of about VND10 billion, so far, his family's total farming area has been expanded to nearly 16,000 square meters. The farm has 45,000 laying hens and sells 25,000 to 30,000 eggs per day.

A special feature of this model is the application of 100% biological products to livestock. His family's chicken-farming model has been granted a VietGap Product Certificate for its eggs.

Plantation:

Dak Nong Organic Agriculture Cooperative specializes in producing landscape coffee. Up to now, the cooperative has 100 members.

It is called landscape coffee because the coffee garden is usually built in a 3-storey model: the first floor is a high tree floor including fruit trees, trees to shade the sun and wind to regulate the temperature of the garden; middle floor coffee plantation, and the lowest layer is grassland.

In particular, these coffee gardens meet the standards of organic production. They use microorganisms, goat or cow manure, and coffee husk to make fertilizer.

With this landscape coffee model, the coffee output is always stable; the quality is also guaranteed. Thus, its selling price is 30%-50% higher than the market price.

Fruits:

About 2 weeks ago, the price of grapes in Vinh Hai Commune, Ninh Hai District, Ninh Thuan Province increased three times higher than at the beginning of 2021.

Currently, the price of traditional red grapes purchased by traders ranges from VND35,000-40,000/kilogram, and green grapes cost VND60,000-70,000/kilogram. On average, each acre of grapes yields from 1.5 to over 2 tons. With the above selling price, after deducting costs, farmers earn a profit of over VND40 million.

According to the functional sector, Vinh Hai Commune has 150 hectares of grapes. About 15% of the area is being harvested with high yield and high prices, helping farmers earn a good source of income.

Farmers, Agriculture, Countryside:

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, up to now, the country has 463,000 hectares of crops certified according to VietGAP standard; 16,991 hectares of aquaculture area certified VietGAP, as well as 924 farms and 1,249 livestock households are VietGAP certified.

According to the assessment, safe agricultural production is an indispensable direction to create a source of clean food, ensure food safety for domestic consumers and for export.

Pet, Flowers and Ornamental Plants:

Concerned that the Covid-19 pandemic will affect the consumption situation, many gardeners in Sa Dec Flower Village (Sa Dec City, Dong Thap Province) actively reduce the number of ornamental flowers supplied for the Lunar New Year Holiday.

Due to the decrease in supply, the price of flowers and ornamental plants this year increased sharply. According to the functional sector, due to the pandemic situation, the area planting ornamental flowers for the Lunar New Year this year is only at 60 hectares, down 50 hectares compared to the previous year. Accordingly, the output of ornamental flowers for the Lunar New Year this year is over 1.5 million flower baskets. Up to now, more than 95% of the area of florist's daisy and gerbera has been ordered by traders.
